More about us
The Langalanga Scholarship Fund was first registered with the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales in March 1999 (Charity number 1076360). Initially the Fund paid for the secondary education of children who attended five ‘harambee’ (self help) primary schools. Now there are now twenty primary schools in the scheme. These schools are in the rural areas of the central highlands, where there are few amenities and the majority of the population are subsistence farmers. Educational opportunity and attainment are low, class sizes are large and the prospects of getting a reasonable education are limited. Selected scholars have to be from particularly disadvantaged homes and to have done very well in the national primary school exams, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). On average, twenty scholarships are awarded each year.
The charity also supports deserving scholars, who qualify through merit, through universities and colleges in Kenya. Only those individuals already in the scheme are considered for such assistance.
Harry Vialou Clark, the Founder and Chairman, receives invaluable assistance from like-minded trustees. Prior to 1999 he had been involved for many years in the construction of rural ‘harambee’ primary schools and, in an ad hoc way, a secondary school. In 2003 he formalised this work and founded the Kariandusi School Trust (KST), a registered charity whose main object is the construction of high quality primary schools.
